Couple discover ‘creepy’ room with child’s bed hidden behind wall in new home

A couple who discovered a child’s bed hidden behind a bathroom in their new home have described the shock find as a “bit freaky”.

Carolyn and Steven Sparks bought the property in Brighton, West Sussex, and needed a detailed plan drawn up to refurbish the property.

During the survey, Steven and the architect found the door but when the architect went down to measure the basement, he failed to mention the extra room.

Inside, it contained a single iron bed.

Carolyn, 42, said: “We discovered there was a basement to the building after we’d purchased the property. It wasn’t on the agents’ details, and nor did we see it when we viewed the property.

“It’s easily missed as it’s accessed via a little WC, so not really a room you’d go into and look at in great detail.

“I thought it’d be funny to film as all we could see was cobwebs and said it would feel spooky. We didn’t expect to find a single iron bed, so it was definitely a little bit freaky!

“That situation alone, never mind finding a child’s bed down there just added to the weird situation.”

After asking the current tenant about the bed, she explained how her daughter had to shoot a horror film for a college assignment.

The basement was the obvious choice for the set, but due to the tenant’s health, and the fact she hates spiders, the bed stayed down there.

The room was part of the original Victorian house and was used to store coal, with an access hole outside where the coal would have been poured into the basement area.

After the renovations, the only way to access the basement will be through the hallway but only to make sure there is access to the pipes in case of emergencies.

Last year a woman left people feeling disturbed when she pulled up an old carpet in her home and discovered a hidden hatch she never knew about.

In a video uploaded to TikTok, which has been watched more than 13 million times, user @Unfortunateexistance filmed the moment she lifted up the grey carpet to find a door with a rusted handle disguised into the old flooring.

The door then hinges open to reveal a set of wooden stairs, as she wrote: “When you pull the carpet off your floor and FIND A BASEMENT YOU NEVER KNEW ABOUT.”

As some viewers begged her to film what was down there, she said at first she had been scared to go down as she heard a “humming noise” which unsettled her friends and she didn’t want to go down alone.

She eventually plucked up the courage to head down the stairs and found wooden furniture, including a chair and bed frame, left on the concrete floor.
