Draft This community health profile is based on Rochdale area and the objective is to identify a major health problem, the wider determinants of health and the nurse role to identify and offer appropriate support to tackle obesity. According to Public Health England website “The health of people in Rochdale is generally worse than the England average. Rochdale is one of the 20% most deprived districts/unitary authorities in England and about 25% (11,100) of children live in low income families”. It will explore the socio -economic and cultural environment and how these influence the health of people and explain how a nurse can respond to continuous changing needs of patients who are having problems to manage a medical condition.” All nurses must understand how behaviour, socioeconomic and other factors, in the care environment and its location, can affect health, illness, health outcomes and public health priorities and take this into account in planning and delivering care” (NMC, 2010, Nursing Practice and Decision Making).Evidence from Joint Strategis Needs Assessment and Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategies shows that ” 1 in 4 local adults are classed as obese (Department of health,2011, Health Profiles). In children, 11% of reception year are already obese (compared with 9.4% in England and 9.6% in the North West). In year 6, obesity rates are as high as 21%(19% in England, 19,7% in the North West).”These may be the effects of quite low employment in the area of adult population with only 65%, British Minority Ethnicity employment is only 47%, youth unemployment is high (Annual Population Survey, 2011), high rates of children in poverty and low rates of breastfeeding initiating. The World Health Organisations defined obesity “as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health. Obesity is a BMI greater than or equal to 30.” It is very important for the nurses to have good understanding of how people may develop obesity and know how to access the best evidence to use it and work with other medical professionals to offer appropriate support. “All members of the multidisciplinary team (MDT) should be trained and experienced in motivational interviewing and incorporate these technique into their clinical practice.” (Royal College of Physicians 2013). The registered nurses can use different approaches to help patients. “Evidence suggests that the broad adoption of the MECC approach by people and organisations across health and care could potentially have a significant impact onthe health of our population”(Public Health,2016, Making Every Contact Count).Through writing this community health profile on Rochdale area, it can be concluded that it can be very challenging and difficult to work as a nurse in the area but it could berewarding if nurses by using the appropriate approach could manage to improve people’s lives. It is hard to tackle obesity. “There are no easy solutions to the problem but progress is possible. There is scope to do more to promote healthier lifestyles andimprove NHS services. ” (National Audit Office,2001, Tackling Obesity in England, Retrieved from http://www.nao.org.uk/report,tackling-obesity-in-england)
