It is difficult to judge this as a good or a bad practice, since most norms develop around a culture specific to a community or a part of the world. However, while it is essential to demonstrate respect for cultural diversity, it is also imperative to use communication constructively and effectively in a learning environment. In today’s world of active learning, interactive participation is the key to make learning enjoyable, effective and functional.
Participation adds interest; it is often hard to maintain focus if the students only have to listen to the teacher/coach speaking all the time. If students feel free to interact openly with the teacher and with classmates, it engages and involves them to a greater extent in the learning process —it can get them to think and motivate them to make connections with the content. It encourages dialogue between students, helps them learn from each other and to learn the content better when they talk about it.At the same time, it provides the teacher with a feedback each time a student expresses her thoughts, asks or answers a question or participates in a discussion with classmates, so that the teacher can assess the extent of the students’ understanding. But the culture of students speaking only when spoken to and interacting only with the teacher may not allow for these effective learning outcomes. While it is cultural values that lead to how people behave, people are also capable of learning the ways of a new culture by watching, participating and asking questions.
Effective learning requires that we overcome the hurdle of cultural misunderstandings, to be able to implement modern participative methods. Thus it would be a much better choice to allow for more interaction among the whole group and freely, rather than students speaking only to the teacher and when spoken to.
