Inclusive practice is about ensuring individuals are involved and included in all aspects of life and they are not isolated or discriminated.It is also based upon valuing people’s individuality and encouraging individuals to convey their views which would increase their self-esteem.
This links with equality and diversity as it recognises individuals differences as well as treating them fairly(Wyatt et al, 2017). An example of inclusive practice is if an individual were to be deaf, effective communication would come into place which will allow them to consider all their rights. Another example would be if individuals were based from different backgrounds the same support would be given to all the individuals, this links to Equality and Diversity as it gives individuals a sense of diversity and belongingness. As a Health and social care practitioner they have a duty in order to ensure that individuals are supported to live their life as they please and they are empowered . Codes of practice and legislations are also used to support the use of inclusive practice by Health and Social Care practitioners, for example if a service user is at risk of harm the practitioner “should take appropriate action without delay”(Cqc.org.uk, 2018) This requires practitioners to encourage diversity(Chapman, 2018). Practitioners also have a responsibility of ensuring the safety of the individuals and encourage them them to become independent.
The factors that enable inclusive practice is what enables inclusive working practice for example Choice. This enables individuals to make their own choices within their abilities, in order for this to be effective individuals need to be able to have accurate information which is suitable towards their needs for example a format that can be understood. Protecting from danger, harm and abuse is also another factor as practitioners have a duty to safeguard individuals from harm, abuse and danger and to also raise concerns they may have if an individual’s safety or care is at risk, this is also known as whistleblowing as it allows practitioners to recognise signs of abuse and know the different type of policy and procedures available. Although choice is inclusive as it allows individuals to have all choices available to them for there needs it can also have a negative effect on them as a service user may not be able to make a choice due to their disability or illness Inclusivity can be used however sometimes it can not be used up to its full potential as sometimes individuals may characterize individuals within do’s and do(Blogs.
lse.ac.uk, 2018).Protecting from danger, harm and abuse is very crucial as vulnerable individuals are not able to protect themselves due to their lack of knowledge of their rights and wrongs. This can also have a negative impact as it can cause tension between the inclusive individual and the not inclusive individual which may have a big impact on the inclusive individual.Inclusive practice can be challenged as valuing individuals and encouraging them to express their views which may boast their self – esteem may turn into a mean individual that makes choices as well as decisions and are in conflict with health and social care practitioners . It is also crucial that tension and dilemas do not prevent individuals and practitioners from coming and working together to ensure individuals have the same opportunities and acsess than everyone else. including their rights to take risks and make mistakes.
Practitioners must ensure than empathy is used within communication skills as they need to ensure that they listen to individuals , take in what they are saying, and understand their situation and adapt in order to meet the individuals needs
