Innovation and creativity arecritical skills for achieving success in organizations. The need for creative problem solvinghas developed, as more management problems require creative insights in orderto find suitable solutions. Creativityand innovation within a well-functioning organization has been recognized as a pathto success.
Creativity can help improvethe process of solving problems. Creative problem solving gives the competitive edge that businessesare striving to achieve. One of the keyproblems that ties in with innovation and creativity is where does creativityreside? We know that creativity dependson the quality of persons, products, and processes. But what happens when someone doesn’t posseall three of these characteristics? Inorder to reach your full potential of creativity, one must use all threeattributes for creativity. Although wemay acknowledge that a highly creative person (one capable of highly creativework) can generate a highly creative thought process (one that yields highly creative ideas), that personand that thought process are not relevant for study or for management unless theideas are somehow expressed(Site). So, in order to be successful, the person hasto express their creative ideas. Theproblem that lies in many organizations, that people are scared to express theirideas. They are not given credit when theirideas are used, or their ideas are stolen and used by someone higher up in theorganization.
This will definitely putout the creative flame someone is using. It’s very discouraging for someone to have creative ideas and not beable to use them. Another key problemthat could prevent creativity, is when someone possess to much of one trait inthe three-component model of creativity. When looking at the model, expertise, task motivation, and creativityskills, are all used to expand creativity. If someone lacks a trait or one trait overpowers the next, it will takeaway from the creative process, unbalancing the model.
This problem can also be seen in the modelfor impacting the environment on creativity. The organization, just like the individual possess certain elements as wellto help sustain innovation. In order forinnovation to be effective, the organization must have a balance between resources, management practices, and organizational motivation. This can become a problem in organizations, becausethere are times when organizations don’t maximum their full potential.
