One of the most important things I learned fromthis class is about the personal power.

The most essential kind of leadershippower is personal power. Someone is capable in getting people to work becauseof their experience, knowledge, charisma, or access to information when he orshe uses his or her personal power. People’s traits such as honesty, fairness, and compassionare able to help people build up a leader’s personal power.I used to believe that for managers, on onehand, since most of them are achievement-motivated who focus on their personalimprovement, they would like to do the work by themselves. On the other hand, likeother employees, they also hope to get some short-term feedback on their work performanceor evaluation, and then they can let other people understand which jobs theyhave completed and how good they are doing their jobs. However, based on myobservation, I found out managers in large or company, instead of performing allthe tasks by themselves, they need to have others such as their subordinates towork together for the company.

As a result of that, those managers need to do theirjobs without getting some personal and immediate feedback because tasks havebeen assigned to a lot of employees. For example, for a senior project managerin my company, it seems like his job is to focus on more finding project staffswho are able to or know how to persuade or influence other employees not thosewho just can do things better alone by themselves at the corner of the office. Iwould say that is absolutely right after taking this class. So as an employee Ican realize that a professional leader or company top manager here usually possessa real high need for power instead of focusing on getting the achievement,which is very important to their management work. Of course, that need has tobe controlled, so it can be directed to the whole company’s benefit.It is not difficult for me to understand that asthe most effective managers, they are able to develop one of the most importantskills that is to persuade and influence people all the time to help them getthe things done or the things they want. I am not a manager yet but I shouldlearn from them about how to persuade and influence people by the dailycommunication with people, how they can improve their personal power, and howthey are able to get the things they want faster than anything else they do.

Themanagers can make use this ability to guarantee their progress and let them touse all of their other abilities at the high level. Well understanding how topersuade people also brings the managers the respect of the bosses, other employees,friends, and clients. They more and more become the very important people in thecompany, and they can then make use of the ability better and better. To someextent, it means the difference between the failure and success. It is easy tonotice that those managers’ job become more excellent at influencing andmotivating other people to provide the support to them in the achievement of theirproject objectives and the solving of their problems in that project, and theboss and coworkers become more and more trust them. Influencing others lookslike a kind of art, and the effective people are able to master that to getothers to work with, and at the same time to improve the personalpower which can help better influence others. Considering the personal power, the differencebetween being powerful and being powerless can result the difference between beinginfluential and having little or maybe no influence at all on the other people’sbehaviors.

 After knowing some basis of organizationalhuman behavior, I become more aware that even some simple human interaction caninvolve a complex process or combination of persuasion and influence. In acompany or even a small group, people can either persuade other people to gethelp, or people could be persuaded to help the others. I understand that formost of the employees like soldiers at the frontline, they are often the onesthat will be persuaded to help others, mostly for their managers.

Outside the class I also tried to recall howthe communication usually goes between those senior managers and me or the communicationbetween the manager and the other employees in a group in my company, and Istart viewing those successful people with personal power as the persuasionexperts. Like some senior manager in my company again, they may spend much timethinking about how they can get other people to help them. It is mentioned alot in class that an individual’s action is motivated by something. Ifpersuasion is an art, the most important factor to this art is motivation. Formost of the time, the managers would like to find out what can really motivate theother people, and the manager will try to provide them that necessary motivation,such as the desire for gain to want more money, respect, success, happiness andhealth. This is the key to persuade people successfully. I also found they mostlyplan and strategize very carefully before they start acting even for the taskassignment.

They obviously have very clear definition of their goals, and thenthey are also clear about choosing which people to choose to have their cooperationto achieve those goals. Then they probably think about what they may need to doin return to get the others to help them. So that is how they achieve theirgoals through persuasion and influence indirectly.
