Scientists the world, farmers struggled because they used pesticides

Scientists are coming up with innovations everyday to make people’s
lives easier.  However, sometimes they
can actually affect the world in many negative ways.  Genetic modification is one of these
innovations surrounded by multiple opinions that are both negative and positive.  Genetically modified organisms (GMO’s) are
organisms with genes that are changed using technology to change their
characteristics and they are usually used on crops such as: rice, tomatoes,
soy, and most importantly corn (What are GMOs?).
There are problems that are solved using genetic modification, and
various implications of using genetically modified crops specifically corn on
the environment.

     Before scientists
created genetic modification or have been introduced to only some parts of the
world, farmers struggled because they used pesticides to keep the insects away
from the crops.  They are a major source
of pollution.  According to several
studies, the remainders of the pesticides appear to be in the air, water, and
the soil.  This will affect the health of
humans because the remainder may build up in the air, which will decrease the
quality of oxygen and may lead to lung associated sickness.  If the remainders get in the water which is
fresh, then it will polute water and become hazardous to organisms that swim in
the water.  Soil also gets damaged
because of the decreasing amount of minerals from the usage of pesticides and
it will become less fertile, it is also a key factor to causing deforestation (Advantages and Disadvantages of Pesticides and the
Environment).

     Genetic modification
helped in reducing the pesticide use which is very pollutant to the
environment, because when ?using them, they contain bio
pesticides that are natural and taken from different species, like ?animals, plants, and bacteria Referring to a finding in a
report, the usage of pesticides between 1996 and 2010 decreased by -8.6 % which
is an approximate of 438 million kg (Global Economic and Environmental Benefits of GE Crops Continues to
Rise)
After using genetic modification, the pollution will gradually start to fade,
the air will get clearer and healthier than when using pesticides, the water
won’t be polluted or toxic for species that live in the water, and soil will
also be fertile and full of minerals which will decrease the risk of
deforestation. Corn is one of the crops that should be genetically modified.

     Corn is the most known
grain for most of the world, and it is a popular genetically modified organism,
since it can’t oppose weeds, pests, and diseases.  Corn also cannot reproduce by it self because
it needs the help of humans.  In
addition, it needs many minerals to survive, which is why it is genetically
modified.  If corn continues to be
genetically modified, then it will taste better because it can be created sweeter,
have more nutritional value like vitamins or minerals in which it is used at
times when people are trying to stay healthy, and it will last longer than it
was from the chemicals used to genetically modify it (Benefits of GM Food:) (Pickut).
when the corn lasts longer, then it will reduce the amount of corn that gets
rotten.

     On the other hand, genetically
modified corn can cause many negative effects to the environment and to our
health. Corn can cause allergic reactions since corn gets filled with soybeans
which are one of the foods that cause many people to have allergic reactions
and they might suffer.  There were many
studies conducted that demonstrated the consumption of food guided a major
growth of allergic reactions.  Even if
the people who have these allergic reactions stay away from the corn or a crop,
they will still be at risk because an animal might have ate this corn in a
great amount and then people could eat that animal which will get allergic
reactions (11 Pros and Cons of Genetically Modified Corn).  The biggest concern is that it also might be
cancerous and have higher rates of it and a danger to develop tumors.  Sometimes, the corn could be hazardous to
many animals that aren’t dangerous or insects that are helpful to the corn (Bell).

     There are biased
opinions of the topic of genetic modification, with many advantages such as:
not harmful to the environment like pesticides, healthier than regular crops
because of the added nutritional value.  When
being specific about one crop, it does have dis-advantages for example, allergic
reactions, toxic to many harmless animals, and could be carcinogenic.  Corn has many advantages too, for instance,
it is nutritional, tastier, and lasts longer in which people will not waste it.
