Smartphones have become a part and parcel of people’s lives today. A lot of questions are raised by people when deciding to buy a given type of smartphone. First is the question of what operating system they should buy; Android or iOS? Second, is the decision about the amount of money that they should spend on a phone. Third, is about the beneficial features that they will get when buying a particular brand of phone.
Lastly is about the specifications that each phone has like- camera, battery life, user interface etc. There are people who claim that Androids are better than iPhones, while others claim the reverse. However, people prefer buying trending phones as they come with extra features that ease the way of communication and provide entertainment. There have been many improvements in Android and iOS devices through technological advancements. Thus, though they might seem similar, Android and iOS have some quite distinguishing characteristics.A significant resemblance between Android and the iOS phones is their shape. All iOS phones have the same form, that is, they are all rectangular with round corners (Gronli et al., 2014: 636).
A similar shape can be observed in Android phones such as the typical Galaxy Samsung model. Equally, the iOS and Android display the same touchscreen which is unusually large and covers almost the entire front part of the device but the size and resolution may vary as per the usage of the customer. The full screen in both technologies similarly serves the same functions of acting as a navigating tool due to the absence of usual buttons mostly used in the non-smartphones. Both appliances possess a high-resolution MP3 and cameras. Also, both phones allow users to enjoy the 3G.4G, and Wi-Fi, which is always fast and reliable (Sheikh et al., 2013: 143). In addition, both the devices allow users to download lock patterns from the third party apps to change the lock screen and that indeed prevents users from accidental calling and keeping the devices inactive when not in use.
Moreover, like the Android, iOS presents a similar notification center that enables the customer to access features such as text messages and update notifications (Sheikh et al., 2013: 148). It is also quite easy to download apps from Apple store and Google play respectively by just signing in the account and clicking ‘INSTALL’ and it would be downloaded within no time. There is an additional feature of multitasking in both the phones where a user can switch from one app to another app at a given time while the apps running in the background don’t get close. Likewise, based on the similarity of their app store, iOS and Android phones have similar downloadable features such as automatic storage.
On the other hand, iOS and Android phones have significant differences, especially in their system of performance. For instance, iOS apps have more sound quality compared to Android’s, which lets iOS phones possess more selection features. iPhones have more apps as well, being 75,000 more compared to android phones (Zimbra, Sarangee, and Jindal, 2017: 100). It is assumed that the additional apps on iOS might be the contributing factor to its high price.
Concerning the download permission, Android phones allow the users to download from third-party sites and are more accommodative to the developers’ rights compared to the iOS phones which restrict downloads only to their designed sites. This implies that iOS is more secure than Android from threats caused by third-party sites. As for software performance, iOS displays a high level of simplicity and user-welcoming mode of service as compared to android technologies which require tedious customization of the phone settings and applications (Lee et al., 2016: 80). Apple ensures that the user control is well-designed and user-friendly and doesn’t disappoint users in terms of well-designed products whereas Android devices provide an upper edge when it comes to the customization and selection from the wide array of widgets. It is reported that the Android devices have less battery life as compared to that of iOS devices but it is easy to replace the batteries on our own on the Android devices.
Similarly, transferring files and copying data from the Android phones to the computer is way easier than from iOS phones since there isn’t any requirement for the second-party authorization like iTunes which makes the task hassle-free. It is wonderful to see how Apple is combining QR reader with the camera app whereas, on Android devices, the user has to download the QR scanners which might contain ads and unauthorized accesses. However, as per the current standing, Android technologies have more carriers than iOS, a feature that makes them more accessible and available.In conclusion, Android and iOS technologies display more differences than similarities. It is because of these differences that many users prefer selected features that suit their preferences such as simplicity of applications or customization of the same. With ever-growing technological advancements in phone production, people tend to buy more appealing and relevant phones that fulfill their desires.
Apparently, such preferences will lead to the development and invention of more adaptive phone features such as screen resolutions, battery size, increased application performance, and so on.
