Sophie chose Buddy Holly because I heard a lot

Sophie FriesenMrs. MooneyhanBlue 1History of Rock and RollFinalIn the early 20th century African Americans created a new genre called blues. This new style of music reflected their challenges from sharecropping and all the way to racial injustice. A popular artist during this time was Blind Lemon Jefferson who sang gospel along with blues. He was one of the most popular singers and was called “The father of Texas blues”. What makes Jefferson unique is that he was born blind and performed with a high voice, shouting style, and advanced guitar technique. He impacted the musical world as he was one of the founders of Texas blues. Some of his most popular songs include Matchbox Blues, Easy Rider Blues and Black Snake Moan. I chose Blind Lemon Jefferson because I thought it was really interesting that he was a blind artist.  Buddy Holly was born on September 7, 1936, in Lubbock, Texas. His real name is Charles Hardin Holley, but his mom gave him the nickname Buddy when he was a child. He was a performer by 16 with the song “Peggy Sue” and “That’ll Be The Day” and was a rising star. In 1955, Holly opened for for Elvis Presley and was a big inspiration for him. Sadly Holly died at age 22 from a plane crash and his funeral was held at the Tabernacle Baptist Church back in Lubbock. His music did not leave when he did, but influence many artist in the future including Bob Dylan. I chose Buddy Holly because I heard a lot about him, but did not know a lot about his career. Folk singer Bob Dylan is one of the most influential singer/songwriters of the 20th century, and is known for his lyrics. Dylans real name is Robert Allen Zimmerman and began performing folk music in 1961. In 1960 Dylan dropped out of college and moved to New York where his idol Woody Guthrie was hospitalized. What made Dylan unique is his lyrics and how it had meaning towards it and some had his opinions on his political beliefs. He also broke music rules and brought in the electric guitar to his music which was a big deal, and after that music changed forever. Some of his famous songs include “Like a Rolling Stone”, “Blowin in the Wind”, and “Mr.Tambourine Man”. I picked Bob Dylan to represent folk music because he impacted music so much by songs now having meaning towards it, and changing rules of music. I chose to research Bob Dylan because he is an amazing human being and I think it is so cool how he changed music forever. Heavy metal gets it deep roots from blues in the 1960’s, and has distortion to the sound of the instruments. A famous band in this category is Kiss which includes the members Ace Frehley, Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, and Peter Criss and wa influenced by Bob Dylan. The sound of their music is fist-pounding hard rock with  loud guitars, cloying melodies. It was a sound that laid the groundwork for both arena rock and the pop-metal that dominated rock in the late ’80s. Some of their famous songs is “Rock N Roll All Night” and “Destroyer”. Kiss is unique because they can be categorized into two different genres. Their costumes and makeup make them glam, but their music is heavy metal which helped contribute to rock and roll. Artist who dress up in costumes and have a theatrical performance go under the genre glam rock. A famous artist in this genre is Elton John who was from Britain. John has been a great talent ever since he was young and won himself a scholarship to a youth program at the Royal Academy of Music in London. when John performs he plays the piano, so we dressed up to spice up his performance since he was stuck behind a piano. Some of his successful songs include “Bennie and the Jets” and “Your Song”.  Glam rock is all about putting on a performance, so John made it unique by staying only behind a piano. He was influenced by Bob Dylan. I picked to research Elton John because I listen to a lot of his music. James Brown is the “godfather of soul” and is one of the most iconic figures in funk and soul. Funk was brought about by African Americans trying to make a difference in their lives in the 60’s. The whites in the city were moving away to not deal with African Americans, and leaving the cities poor. Funk music helped change people’s depressing minds about things, and helped people make a difference. As one of Brown’s famous songs is “Get Up, Get Into It, Get Involved”. The music is different because every instrument has their own role in it. What is unique about James Brown is that he was diminished from school at age 12 to start working. To escape these harsh realities Brown would turn to music and religion. One of his biggest inspirations was Little Richard. I picked to research James Brown because I liked the songs that we listened to in class.  Disco had a huge effect in the 1970’s from fashion to even affecting films. This genre of music comes from a mixture of R&B and funk. The Village People were a band from this time period and were a part of modern gay rights. Their famous song is “YMCA” and the men involved in the band are “Randy Jones, David Hodo, Felipe Rose, Victor Willis, Glenn Hughes, and Alexander Briley. What is unique about this band is that they dress up as characters to prove a point that anyone can be gay, and that it is not just a stereotype. A band that influenced them was the Monkees. I picked the Village People because I love how they wanted to make a statement, and help stand up for gay people. After funk music was this genre called new wave in the 80’s. The artist in this type of genre were kind of like the rejects. They had a unique sound to their music which was hard to label what genre they were, so all the bands like that were in the new wave. A famous singer in this genre is Tom Petty. Tom Petty started off his career in a band called the mudcrutch, and later with a band called Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Later on he broke single and some of his popular songs were “Free Fallin” and “Learning to Fly”. Petty won three Grammy awards when collaborating with Bob dylan, Stevie Nicks, George Harrison, and Johnny Cash. Some artist that influenced Petty was Elvis and the Beatles.  I picked Tom Petty because I already knew a little bit about him. Seattle in the 90’s was a bad time to be around with people feeling that they can not succeed in anything in life. This sound became the genre Grunge and the band that is the figure of this genre was Nirvana. This band included Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, and Dave Grohl. The style this band had was on the thriftier side and looking like they do not care what people think. Their hair would look greasy and not brushed, and wearing flannels which was not popular to wear back then. Some famous songs this band had was “Smells like Teen Spirit” and “Come As You Are”. Kurt Cobain was heavily influenced by the Beatles when he was younger and Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin when he was older. Sadly Cobain took his life from suicide only at the age of 27. He was addicted to heroin and was depressed. I picked Nirvana because this band changed everything about music and showed the less glamorous side of fame. In the late 70’s emerged this genre called hip hop/ rap music. This came from the south side of the Bronx where white flight happened, leaving African Americans in poor living conditions. This music consisted of dj’s using the breaks of songs and using them as a beat. The artist I picked is not from the 70’s, but an artist more well known today named Snoop Dogg. Snoop Dogg is known for drug use and has gone to prison for being caught with cocaine. He was a gangster himself, so he knew how to make himself sound more powerful and use codes in his song that only people in gangs would understand. Some of his famous songs include “Woof” and “Lay Low”. An artist that influenced Snoop Dogg was George Clinton.  I picked Snoop Dogg because he was the first artist I thought of when I had to choose someone.
