The a timer helps to do rehabilitation exercise more

The mainpurpose of this study is to design and study the theracycle prototype. From thetests carried out on its functions reveal that the developed prototype hasachieved its objective efficiently.

Results are tremendous and promising as patient was comfortable and physiotherapist showed a positiveresponse. It is portable, lightweight, user friendly and extremely cost effective. It will help inrehabilitation of patients with injury and diseases not only in Pakistan butall around the world especially in poor and third world countries whereresources and rehabilitation is quite limited to specific individuals.CONCLUSIONNo such prototypes are available in markets, it is first of its kind aspoverty is a disease widespread in third world countries and more costeffective solutions should be provided with basic resources. Many high end exercisesmachines are available but such devices are not affordable and economical formajority.

Proposed design not onlyfulfil its basic objective but have most significant feature-inexpensive andreasonable. The overall device is ideal for rehabilitation and physiotherapypatients. It can be used not only in Pakistan but in other least developedcountries as well. Results were tremendous andpromising as the patient was comfortable and physiotherapist have more controlover rotation per minutes and setting a timer helps to do rehabilitationexercise more effectively by not over doing it as in manual bicycle.

After using the prototype both patient andphysiotherapist showed positive response. RESULTSThrough theexperiment, we anticipated to identify how well users performed with both manualand prototype to evaluate the objective utility and effectiveness. The test wasconducted on a manual bicycle, then he was explained about prototype and wasasked to take a trial on designed prototype.                The thera-cycle is built to enablepeople to exercise who otherwise could not. The feet or arms are secured to thepedals. Any kind of seat can be used with it which aids the patient who cannotmove from their seat or having a mobility disorder. The Smart Motor helps movetheir legs, starting the process of regaining muscle tone and flexibility.

A regime designed around forced exercise is initiated and physicalfitness through exercise is possible again. Electrical musclestimulator can also be added for better results and quick recovery as perpatient needs. Muscle strength is also regained with EMS also known as neuromuscular electricalstimulation (NMES) or electromyostimulation. It is theequipment used in physiotherapy treatment that causesthe elicitation of muscle contraction using electric impulses, itdirects small pulses of electricity to specific nerves. The purpose is toreduce the sensitivity of nerve endings in the spinal cord, thereby closing thepain ‘gates.’ In an electronic muscle stimulator circuit, the equipmentstimulates nerves of that part of body where electrodes are attached. DeviceWorkingØ  Flexible Seat optionsØ  AC ControllerØ  TimerØ  Light Weight Ø  On/Off Switch This prototype is available withfollowing features: It is portable, cost effective, light weight and operates by AC voltages.

It will aid in rehabilitation as wellas physiotherapy patient in regaining muscle strength. EMS can also incorporatedas per patient requirements.OtherFeaturesThe simple design of the AC motor results inextremely reliable, low maintenance operation. Unlike the DC motor, there areno brushes to replace. If run in the appropriate environment for its enclosure, the AC motor can expect to need new bearings after several years of operation. If the application is well designed, an AC motor may not need new bearings formore than a decade.d.     RELIABLEOPERATION AND LOWER MAINTENANCE Power factor of an AC electrical power system isdefined as the ratio of the real power flowing to the load to the apparentpower in the circuit.

A load with a low power factor draws more current than aload with a high power factor for the same amount of useful power transferred.Higher currents increase the energy lost in the distribution system, andrequire larger wires and other equipment.c.      HIGHPOWER FACTOR The fixed number of winding sets (known as poles)built into the ac motor, which determines the ac motors base speed- thefrequency of the AC line voltage. Variable speed drives (Adjustable speeddrives) change this frequency to change the speed of the motor. – The amount oftorque loading on the motor, which causes slip.b.     SPEEDVARIATION Lowest cost motor for applications requiring morethan about 1/2 hp (325 watts) due to the simple design of the motor.

a.     LOWCOST We used AC motor over DC motorAn AC Controller (Sometimes referred to as a Driver) is known as thedevice that controls the speed of the AC Motor. The AC Motor receives power, which is ultimately converted by the AC Controller into an adjustablefrequency. This adjustable output allows the motor speed to be preciselycontrolled. AC ControllersTheracycle utilizes ac gear motor.

It converts electrical energy into mechanicalenergy and is designed to produce high torque while maintaining a low horsepower,or low speed, motor output.  Thefundamental operation of an motor relies on the principles of magnetism.Gear MotorThe key feature of theracycle is the implantation of smart motor that move the pedals automatically at slow speed especially designed for patient use.

The speed can vary using AC Controller. Key FeatureSignificant components used are AC Gear Motor incorporated in a manual bicycle along with AC Controller, timer and power switch to form a Thera cycle.METHODS AND MATERIALIn survey from markets, it has been observed that there does not exist the cost effective and automatic rotary stationary bikes to do therapy for patients. Proposing cost effective, user friendly and efficient prototype design a system for therapy of legs entitled as “Theracycle”. It will be useful in physiotherapy as well as in rehabilitation engineering to combat various disorder diseases and conditions which cause immobilization of limbs.  Exercise is good for rehabilitation.

Most Arms and Legs exercise equipment requires a certain level of health and muscle strength to do, contraction & expansion in other word flexion and extension. Often individual with disability / injury/ pain can’t perform these exercises results in loss of mobility and muscle strength. It is also known as physical rehabilitation or physiotherapy, treatments and exercises concerned with remediation of impairments and disabilities through promotion of mobility, functional ability, and quality of life. It is a Health Care profession concerned with the assessment, maintenance, and restoration of the physical function and performance of the body. It is a distinct form of care, which can be performed either in isolation or in conjunction with other types of medical management. 1.1.1.

Physical TherapyAfter a serious injury, illness or surgery, recovery is slow. Recovery often requires to regain strength, relearn certain skills and new ways to perform task with limitations. This process is rehabilitation.
