The American Dream is a set of ideals that changes periodically. The idea changed so much that it is considered to be nearly impossible to achieve. The national ethos of the United States calls out to many people around the globe. A lot of immigrants daily, come to claim their entitlement to freedom and an easy life. Which can be inferred that the American Dream still lives on but the odds of achieving is questioned. It has been speculated before that the American Dream has changed overtime. From wanted materialistic things in ’29, to purchasing a house in ’07, the American Dream takes on personal accounts for their own achievement. Jay Gatsby from the novel “The Great Gatsby” seeks to live the American Dream. Jay possess the wealth that many people come here in the first place and yet he has a gaping hole the doesn’t allow him to be satisfied with what he has now. With money, a house, and social currency; Jay pursues to win back his significant other Daisy, not out of leisure class, but to fulfill his American Dream with the love of his life by his side. Its was his efforts that makes his wealth earned. Jat has intentions and goals to be successful that others would view as selfish. The falsehood of the American Dream is fueled by critics who judge other people’s lives rather than their own. A lot of people have similar views of wealth and happiness the path of attaining these personal goals unfortunately leaves them to keep dreaming. The term “American Dream” was first introduced in 1931 by historian James Truslow Adams. He proposed “That dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for every man, with opportunity for each according to his ability or achievement.” (Youngro Lee, To Dream Or Not To Dream, 16 Cornell Journal of Law and Public Policy 231, 232). Therefore, the term “American Dream” means not one type of house on one type of lot, but an economy open to talent, whether in dense cities, streetcar suburbs, or small towns. People from all over the world believed in the limitless opportunities in America. Or so they thought. The ideals of the American Dream took a new course and history along with it. Periodically, desires changed and the mainstream ideas developed into more market opportunities for people to take part in. In the 1920s, the American Dream transpired into the acquisition of material things. Everyone wanted to show off their wealth and this was best epitomized by the novel “The Great Gatsby”. Written by, F. Scott Fitzgerald, simultaneously defined the aspirations of the age and warned that a pursuit of happiness driven by greed was not attainable. He noted that the greed of the commonwealth led to the stock market crash of 1929 and the Great Depression. In early 2006, the dream extended to having upon decent housing, a good job, education and health care. F. Scott Fitzgerald depicted that greed is responsible for a heavy toll, history repeated itself when the Great Recession of ’08 occured. It destroyed the lives of millions. Some people think the Great Recession and rising income inequality spelled the end of the American Dream. But it only damaged the materialistic American Dream showcased in the 1920s. Instead, many people are realizing that the American Dream better reflects the values of the country for which it was named for. “A focus on more of what really matters, such as creating a meaningful life, contributing to community and society, valuing nature, and spending time with family and friends.” (Center for a New American Dream) The Declaration of Independence doesn’t mention about any type of lifestyle. It does not define what that happiness should look like. Instead, it seeks to ensure that everyone has equal opportunity to pursue a personal vision. It also promotes faith in private free enterprise as a way to pursue that happiness.
