The firearm at a gun show. A felon or

The United States accounts for only 46 percent of the population, but 82 percent of gun deaths. On an average 93 Americans are killed with guns daily, whether it be due to suicide, murder or user error.  Since we cannot control the people, we must find a way to control the guns.  On November 5th of 2017, a gunman opened fire on a church, taking at least 26 innocent lives from unsuspecting victims. Trump called the incident a “mental health problem at the highest level” and not ” a gun situation,” adding that the gunman was a “very deranged individual”(Montgomery). The issue is that often times when there is a mass murder in America,   high officials tend to claim that mental illnesses are to blame for the shooting(s). This opens the door for shooters to feel as though they have a  valid reason for taking innocent lives. People who want to possess weapons must  have a thorough universal background check ran, be examined by a government trusted, experienced doctor ( psychologist), and be at least 18 years of age. With these extensions to the gun control laws we already have now, we will be able to decrease the number of mass shooting in the united states. In comparison to other countries the United States is extremely loose with gun control laws and regulations. In Israel to become licensed and have the privilege of owning a gun, an applicant must be an “Israeli citizen or permanent resident and be at least 21 years old, the applicant must show genuine cause to carry a firearm” (Masters). In the United States only “thirty six states require a license” in order for an individual to own a gun (The).Currently only nine states out of the fifty states in the US require a universal background check to be ran in order for a person to be eligible to purchase a firearm at a gun show.  A felon or minor can easily walk into a gun show  and purchase a weapon with no questions asked. This makes it easier for felons with bad intentions to purchase powerful weapons without the worry of being stopped and/or caught. “When surveys were ran, overall the public was more accepting of measures that  limited the types of people who could obtain weapons over the idea of restricting the types of guns and accessories available on the market”( Sanger). With limiting the types of people able to own and operate a gun we are able to eliminate some of the risks that come along with these people. With eliminating people under the age of 18 we decrease the risk of user error, often times when minors come into contact with weapons they are uninformed on how to properly operate the firearm which drastically increases the risk of someone getting hurt. User error is a term that is used when the user does not know how to correctly use the weapon and therefore causes harm to others or themselves, unintentionally. Such as the incident where the Georgia teen, Malachi Hemphill, ” fatally shot himself while handling a  gun in his bedroom” ( Salo). There are also other incidents where minors act off of impulse and emotion, which leads to events such as school shootings, suicide, and many other horrific events. Such as the recent shooting that occured on January 23rd of 2017 in “Western Kentucky, Sixteen people were wounded  two of them fatally, after a shooter opened fire Tuesday morning at Marshall County High School. The victims ranged from ages fourteen to eighteen state police say.” (Yan). Their shooter was a fifteen year old male whose identity has yet to be announced. Now these students are forced to deal with the trauma and stress that this event has caused to their lives, they will never be the same again.Having people receive mental examinations from both government trusted doctors and psychologists will help us to keep mentally unstable individuals from responsibility they are unable to handle. Often times mass shootings in society are due to mentally unstable individuals being in possession of a weapon. Mentally ill or unstable persons are more likely to act spontaneously with a weapon than those without mental illnesses. On July, 23rd 2017 James Holmes was accused of opening fire in a movie theatre July 20, 2012, Killing twelve people and wounding seventy. Holmes plead not guilty to 166 counts , by reason of insanity” (Pearson). In the act Holmes “sprayed the Century 16 theater with bullets from an AR-15 rifle, a 12-gauge shotgun and at least one of two .40-caliber handguns, the guns were purchased legally by Holmes at stores in the Denver area in the past two months” (Pearson). Had a mental examination been necessary before Holmes was able to purchase these weapons twelve lives could have been saved.Often times the main cornerstone of the gun control argument is the Second Amendment of the Constitution. This amendment states that, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” Gun control opponents insist there is a constitutional right for individuals to have weapons, and passionately argue against any restrictions they see as threatening this right. Yet in 2008 the US Supreme Court ruled that that this amendment referred to the individual’s right to own a gun for self-defense purposes only. Other supporters of gun control recognized that the writers of the Constitution could not have imagined some of the weapons that are currently available or the amount of damage that could be inflicted by an average person who just happens to be armed with one of these guns. Having people who want to possess a weapon be examined by an experienced doctor (psychologist) will decrease the amount of mass shootings that are due to “mental illnesses” and other psychological issues. Incorporating universal background checks into the equation will further help to make accessing firearms and other weapons harder for convicted criminals and  dangerous individuals . Creating a legal age for gun ownership would allow us the opportunity to decrease the amount of minors who die due to user error, and would help us to prevent school shootings. Often times the victims of mass shootings are people who never even knew their shooter. Uncomplicated access to firearms makes killing easy, efficient, and impersonal, further increases the lethality of the crime. Tighter gun control will drastically decrease the risks of allowing “deranged individuals”, criminals and minors the chance to take lives from unsuspecting, innocent  individuals.
