The question refers
to, how human beings want to gain more knowledge but it comes at the price of
doubt. The more you learn, the alternatives and the controversies become
clearer, thus we don’t know which is the right way. The more knowledge you
have, overthinking increases in our mind. For instance, when we are going on
the street driving our car, the norm is that we overtake from the driver’s side
of the other person. However, when we think about it more, we sometimes are
stuck in situations of indecision as we start thinking what if the person in
front of me is planning an overtake too? What if, just like me, he prefers the
side view mirror of the passenger’s side more than the side view mirror of his
own side. Just like this, the statement of “with knowledge doubt increases” can
be related to Areas of knowledge too. Due to the various experiences and facts
that I have picked over the years, I do believe that knowledge leads to an
increase in the doubt in our mind. This is the very reason why researchers and
scholars keep on digging further and further as they move from one point to the
other in their chosen field of study. Answers to previous questions lead them
on to newer questions and this is exactly how the field of learning grows.
However, a question that must be considered is, is knowledge the root cause of doubt or is what quells doubt and leads
to confidence? In order to try and find an answer to this question
religious systems and natural sciences would be looked in to. What I hold is
that knowledge is what leads one to doubt the existing and search for answers
to the questions that emerge out of these doubts.

knowledge system serves as a ready field to explore when it comes to the impact
that knowledge has on the level of confidence attained. Religion plays an
important role in many people’s life. Religion influences how one behaves or
the how a person behaves ethically. The more a person knows about religion, he
or she doubts on what he or she believed as a kid. Thus, religious knowledge
system can be inspected to look at my stance as doubts here are emerging out of
attainment of knowledge. As a kid, we are taught about religion and are asked
to follow it, without even questioning it. Most people follow religion blindly
and believes in the beliefs and the perspectives of the religion, however as we
grow up and gain knowledge we start to doubt and question the religion, with
the gaining of knowledge our doubts towards following a religion increases and
confusion arises as to what to follow and that have I been taught wrong? After
gaining knowledge, one might doubt as to why one must follow a religion and
might question the existence of it and thus have various thoughts upon the
religious knowledge system and thus might have a lot of confusion regarding the
knowledge which he or she has learnt or been taught. They say that religion is
something that is linked to the emotional markup of humans and thus must be
dealt with based on faith and not logic. Even here though, there is a conflict
which comes to the fore as one digs deeper into the field of religion. Multiple
texts like Shreemad Bhagvad Geeta which happens to be a work held in high
regard by the Hindus, states that logic is the very foundation of human life.
Do be analytical and logical is thus human. As we go along on this path further
though, the doubts increase and the gift of faith is lost in the pursuit of
absolute truth. Thus, the more the knowledge, one might become less confident
and thus have more doubts.

However, this
perspective can be counterclaimed as it is a subjective topic. In many cases,
we have seen that a person who has a lot of knowledge about religion, becomes
clearer about what is it and the nature of religion and the cause for its
existence and thus have less doubts as to why one must follow a religion. This
is the very reason why the people like bishops, maulanas and sant mahants are
able to make claims with conviction. The knowledge that they have in depth
about the religion or the tenets of it that are being dealt with, is what gives
them confidence.

When it comes
to natural sciences there are so many doubts that were not present earlier but
now as individuals have researched more in the fields concerned, doubts instead
of going down have increased. For example, in the initial phase Earth was at
the centre of the Universe and the zodiacs, the Sun and the moon along with all
the planets moved around this planet in the imagination of the people.  People were more confident at that point of
time than where they are today. The knowledge that the scientists have gained
have not made them more certain about things that are linked to what happens to
be the nature of the Universe. That is why we have the Big Bang theory being
altered to fit in the parallel Universe contemplation and as of now the M
String Theory that has further been strengthened by the discovery of Higgs
Boson. The study though, instead of coming closer to the final answer, has led
to further explorations and contemplations regarding the actual scheme of
things. In this case clearly, it was knowledge that instead of doing away with
doubts, has given birth to a lot more.

On the other end of the spectrum
when there was much confusion as to the nature of the planet and very little firsthand
knowledge, there were doubts about the claims made by many that it was not the
Sun that revolved around this planet but rather this planet that moves around
the Sun. Only with the emergence of devices like the telescope and the
continuous efforts of many like Galileo were the people able to know and say
with confidence exactly what the relationship of the Earth with respect to the
Sun was.

                Towards the end of the
discussion what can safely be concluded is that exploration can lift the fog in
front of the eyes of the individual concerned who is looking at the field
concerned. However, further exploration also can create doubts as questions are
raised. What we do realize after the real-life scenario and subject
explorations though is that the confidence that arises out of ignorance is
innocent faith but it is temporary. As the knowledge levels increase questions
emerge out of the woodworks and these questions lead us on to further exploration
along the line of study. Throughout the subjects that we have talked about it
is apparent that exploration and further probe are nurtured by doubt and it is
this doubt in the preset conventions that leads to all the advancements that we
see around us. On the other had the blissful ignorance may result in blind
faith which is detrimental to the spirit of discovery and scientific
temperament per se. On the other hand, the fact that ignorance exists about
certain points can in fact lead to the feeling of insufficiency and hence
actually promote the desire to know about things instead of arming the
individual concerned with dogmatic faith. What this leads us to believe is that
while in certain situations confidence can arise out of ignorance, it is just blind
faith and for further evolution of human race continuous self-doubt and
questioning of the knowledge acquired is a must.
