There are different types of modifiable risk factors for an elderly who has diabetes. The diet related modifiable risk factors for an elderly who has diabetes are diet low in fiber, diet high in saturated fat and trans fat. As for lifestyle related modifiable risk factors for those who has diabetes it include sedentary lifestyle, being overweight or obese, central adiposity and dyslipidaemia. The modifiable risk factors for diet related will be diet that are low in fiber. Fiber is a type of carbohydrate that cannot be digested. Elderly who diet is low in fiber can cause them to develop diabetes. This is because fiber helps to control blood sugar by slowing gastric emptying and it lessen the post meal rise in blood sugar. Elderly who does not consume enough fiber can cause a sudden spikes in their blood sugar level. This cause the pancreas to pump out more insulin into the blood. For elderly who has diabetes, diet that is low in fiber will actually quickens the glucose absorption from the small intestines into the blood. This can cause their blood sugar to spike up causing them to develop Type 2 diabetes. The modifiable risk factors for lifestyle related will be obesity. Elderly who are obese has a higher chance of developing diabetes type 2. Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition that affects the way the body metabolizes sugar which is an important source of fuel for the body. Being inactive and eating unhealthy diet can cause a person to be obese which increase their chances of getting pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes. When the person is obese, they have more fatty tissue which causes the cells to be more resistant towards the insulin. Obesity can also change the body’s metabolism and this causes the fat tissue to release fat molecules into the blood. This can actually distrupt the insulin responsive cells and lead to reduced insulin sensitivity. Therefore, being obese increase the change of and elderly to have diabetes. In conclusion, there are others modifiable factors that can cause an elderly to develop diabetes. The elderly should be cautious of what they eat and how they lead their life on a daily basis. They can adopt a healthy lifestyle such as changing their diet and being physically active. This can reduce their risk of getting chronic diseases.
