It was originally established so as to produce vegetable andrefined oils.Azim Premji took over the company at a mere age of 21 in 1966.

During the 1970s and 1980s, the company shifted its centre tonew business opportunities in the IT and computing industry, which was at abudding phase in India at the time. The company’s name changed from WesternIndia Vegetable Products Limited, to Wipro Products Limited and to WiproLimited in 1982. The year 1980 was notably known for the entrance of Wipro inthe IT domain.

Wipro enlarged its product line into heavy-duty industrialcylinders and mobile hydraulic cylinders in the year 1988.Wipro Infotech and Wipro Systems were merged with Wipro. Wiproacquired Wipro Acer in 1998. Wipro’s profitability and diversity increased with theintroduction of new products such as the Wipro SuperGenius personal computers.The product was the one Indian PC range to acquire US-based National SoftwareTesting Laboratory NSTL certification for the Year 2000 for compliance in hardwarefor the models which it manufactured.

Wipro got listed onNew York Stock Exchange in the same year. Wipro’s ViceChairman Vivek Paul and Azim Premji joined hands with KPMG to form an outsourcingjoint venture between the two organizations in the early 2000s..  As the company diversified and enlarged it’soperation, it eventually became the fastest wealth creator for 5 consecutiveyears i.e. 1997-2002.

In the same following year was witnessed the launch of Wipro’sown laptops with Intel’s Centrino mobile processor. Wipro primarily shook handswith the owners of Chandrika so they could get an opportunity to be themarketer of their soaps in certain states of India. Wipro established a fullyowned subsidiary company called Wipro Consumer Care Limited for rendering andproduction of consumer care and lighting products.
