This is carried out by dissolving some sugar cakes or sugar cubes in a special type of iron bowl containing water. As the Panj Piaray sit around the bowl, the sweetened water is constantly stirred with a double edged sword and some set pieces of holy verses are recited by them. When the recitation is over all the five stand up with the vessel in their hand, and one of them says Ardas or holy verses. The process transforms the water into Amrit. The vows are given in front of everyone to show that this has happened and the newlyweds will live happy lives together The bridegroom then leads the party into the congregation-hall where he sits and waits for the bride to arrive. In the meantime musicians sing the sacred hymns. The bride enters the hall with some members of the family, generally wearing a deep red dress which is often richly embroidered in gold. She sits down next to the groom. Both stay silent. Soon the priest conducting the marriage ceremony asks the bride and the groom as well as their parents to stand up for an initial short prayer. According to the Sikh Rehat maryada, the Kurmai ceremony is not essential. But, if the parents or parties wish, they may do so in the presence of the Guru Granth Sahib and a small congregation of a few relatives and friends. This is a small ceremony that joins close members and friends of the two families to make a more peaceful marriage and family ties on both sides. The families are now together and will protect one another and are completely immune to separation. The families are joined together and will support the couple no matter what. The Sikh faith is very unique culture in that is has it’s similarities to Catholic baptism but there baptism represents something more that just acceptance into the culture and prosperity for life. The marriage is very important to keep alive. The Sikh and Shinto faiths have similar aspects about marriage and coming of age. They are both Eastern cultures so they can have similar ideals on the life they will i’ve afterwards. Both of the faiths look of the communion of the groom and bride in harmony and peacefulness. They both ask god to ask for their prosperous marriage to be protected and kept together no matter what happens. The Shinto faith relies more on spirits and god to keep the marriage together while Sikh faith relies more on the families keeping each other up.
